Middle School Talk

20151110_113045It’s time for another blog post, and this week I would like to share some photos from my time at Livingston County Middle School. I was asked to talk about comics and art by Jennifer Bowles the Art Teacher at Livingston County Schools, the school I went to. Things have changed a bit since I attended, but I found the students to be very receptive to my “lecture” and I can’t say how much I enjoyed spending time talking with Ms Bowles.

Middle School is a very difficult age, at least it was for me. It’s that time you are trying to figure out who you are, from child to teenager. I can’t say I had a pleasant experience in Middle School, I can honestly say I hated it. But I wanted to encourage the kids to keep drawing and the world was at their finger tips with technology and art. And I do hope I at least touched on kids life, especially that kid out there who feels different and wants to become involved with the arts.

Inktober Drawings 2015 (Part 2)

Today at Don’t Pick the Flowers Blog I’m posting the last of my Inktober drawings from 2015. Just in case you missed it, Inktober is a challenge to sketch one drawing a day using ink. You can use nibs, micron pens or whatever type of ink tool you want to use. You can read all about it at Jake Parker’s website (the originator of Inktober), and challenge yourself to draw every day. I will admit, it was a challenge to draw and share every day, and some of my drawing are better than others. I’ll give a brief description in case you missed my personal drawings.

Inktober 2015 (Part 1)

I had mentioned in an earlier blog post you could follow my drawings for #inktober 2015 on the Don’t Pick the Flowers Facebook page or on Instagram, and now I will share half of those for you on today’s blog and the other half next week.  The challenge was exciting and a bit tiring. The tiring part was mostly posting to social media, yes I did also post them on Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest, but Facebook and Instagram is where I focused most. Drawing every day is very important, but I also work plus create and share comics at least 3 times a week, so October may have been a partial blur, not really, but I did stay busy! But I truly enjoyed the drawing and challenge of this year’s #inktober. So here are the inks and a little explanation of each one.

Bottom Left: Suzanne “Interviews a Vampire”, my comic version of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Some of my favorite books. Bottom Right: Suzanne gets a haircut, Edward Scissorhands is my favorite Tim Burton film.

Top Left: I drew a Lewis Carroll type sketch adding Walt Disney’s 1951 animated version of the March Hare, Tim Burton’s Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), and Suzanne. Top Right: Suzanne meets The Mad Monster Party’s Count Dracula. Bottom Left: I am super stoked that The Cure will be touring North America in 2016, YES I HAVE TICKETS!! This is my tribute to my favorite band and my weird version of the song “Torture”. Bottom Right: Suzanne is “Bewitched” . . . yes my version of the TV show that ran from 1964-1972 on ABC.

And there is the first 15 drawings from inktober 2015. I used micron and copic markers in the drawings. Until next week, keep drawing and “don’t pick the flowers”.

Suzanne Sketch Diary (Part 3)

SuzanneAndSkeletons

I am back with Part 3 of the “Suzanne Sketch Diary”, and possibly the last of this series of blogs featuring sketches of Suzanne. To catch you up, the last couple of blogs have been sketches of (mostly) Suzanne drawn throughout this past year. I do plan to post other drawings never posted here in the coming weeks. So to start this off, the picture above is an artwork I posted on Facebook, and used as the banner on the main page of the Don’t Pick the Flowers website.

The drawings on the left are extra sketches I shared on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. You may have seen these before, or if you are new to seeing my work, they now have a home here. I am considering putting a book together with these and other sketches.

Again, more sketches and doodles. The top right image gave me an idea which lead to an actual comic.

I really like the picture to the left. I posted this online and ended up using it as an ad in the 2015 Kenosha Festival of Cartooning Brochure (in Black and White). I had someone mention this would make a great book cover. Hey, that is an idea!

The cartoon on the right was to be used in a Berkeley Breathed Tribute. A group of cartoonist mentioned it and I’m actually not sure what happened as it never came to fruition, so here it is. This idea came from an early comic I drew probably 4 or 5 years ago featuring Vincent and Duck.

And there you have it, a look in my sketch book. It is really fun to have these posted here so you can see them, whether they are good or bad you can see some of the creative process behind my comic. And as I mentioned above, possibly there is a book of sketches on the horizon for you to have of your own. I hope you have enjoyed viewing the sketches and artwork. Until next time, Don’t Pick the Flowers!

Suzanne Sketch Diary (Part 2)

I am continuing with the Suzanne Sketches never posted here at Don’t Pick the Flowers blog. It’s a good way to give them a home and see again or for the first time drawings, doodles and sketches of our young dark heroine. In this set of drawings there is a few “special” comics that were added at GoComics Sherpa or on the DPTF Fan Page but never put on the website. Also, it looks like I added a quick funny sketch of Severus Snape of Harry Potter (looking a bit like Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails). And as I said on the previous blog, these are from earlier in the year, hence the snow and a few other obvious signs of the time of year. Under the posts I will place an explanation if it needs one. I hope you enjoy the drawings.

Top Left: A quick Friday the 13th Sketch posted on DPTF FB Page. Top Right: An Extra Comic for Valentine's Day. Bottom Left And Right: Suzanne enjoying the snow.
