Lego’s, Robert Smith, Tom Waits and The Sakai Project

Lego mania has hit the land, and like so many other cartoonists, I could not pass up the opportunity to make my characters into Lego toys! As an extra, I created this to share via social media and it’s about time I added it to the collection here on the blog. Now if I can get real Don’t Pick the Flowers Lego toys to own myself, I will be one happy camper!

As you may know, the band “The Cure” is one of my all time favorite bands. I came up with this little cartoon version of Robert Smith dancing with cats, a little homage to the song “Love Cats”. Since Love Cats is a happy and fun song, I wanted this drawing to represent the same whimsy. And to keep in the spirit of “Cure” artwork, I drew the text in the style used for the single release.

Another one of my favorite musicians is Tom Waits. I have wanted to draw a caricature of Mr. Waits for some time, and I was finally able to do it. I don’t draw caricatures like this very often, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did drawing it.

Last but not least, here is tribute art for Stan and Sharon Sakai. This artwork was created for “The Sakai Project” which you can read all about here at Dark Horse: www.darkhorse.com/Blog/1581/dark-horse-announces-sakai-project  Stan’s wife Sharon has been battling a deliberating brain tumor; she is at home but in need of 24-hour care. Medical bills are mounting and the comic community is more than happy to help with what the Sakai’s insurance companies do not cover.

Valentine Cards

Valentine’s Day has come and gone, but I hope you created fun memories with a special someone, spouse or friend. You may even be glad it’s over, but one memory that sticks out as a kid are those fun little Valentine Cards you received at School. This year I created Valentine Cards and shared them via the internet to boost those fun memories. I’ve gathered them all here at Don’t Pick the Flowers blog if you would like to look at them again or if you completely missed them. I hope you enjoy these fun little cards as much as I enjoyed making them. Until next time, indulge in that left over Valentine Candy!

The Crazy Verse: Fan Art with Jon Esparza

I have a special treat on today’s blog. The always fun Jon Esparza, creator of the comics “Mike and Mindy” and “Bubble Fox”, and I have exchanged art. Jon is posting guest art on his blog The Crazy Verse, which I am a participant, and he has wonderfully sent a fun comic with my characters Suzanne, Vincent, Claudia and Duck. Jon has dressed my characters in Mike and Mindy’s clothes and Claudia in a Picpak costume (from Kim Belding’s comic PicPak Dog). If you are not familiar with Mike and Mindy, the laws of gravity do not apply and being inflated or having an anvil dropped on them is extracurricular fun. I hope that helps explain both of the comics posted today. Until next time, enjoy the comics and check out Jon’s fun filled world of comics at the links below!

Sketchbook: Extra’s and Warm-ups

Today’s new blog post features sketches from over the last couple of weeks I have done, plus an extra artwork and an archive sketch.

To start with, the artwork right below, “Snow Monster” was created as an extra to post via Social Media and used as a banner for the website at Don’t Pick the Flowers. I love this drawing showing Suzanne with her Snow Monster creation. You will notice characters, which have been in a few of the comics in the past, plus a new one “Bob”. I thought it was time to integrate these characters back into the story line and plan to use them on a regular basis. Don’t worry; the focus is still on Suzanne, Vincent and Duck.

Top Left: This is a warm up sketch from one morning of Benedict Cumberbatch or Sherlock Holmes.

Top Right: Late night sketch of Suzanne, this was done with a brush pen.

Bottom Left: Another warm up sketch, this is Siouxie Sioux of Siouxsie and the Banshees. I think she is playing dead in this picture.

Bottom Right: From the archives, I did this sketch of David Bowie last year (2013) on his birthday. I thought it would be cool to post this and may pull some more sketches from the archives on a later date.

Keep sketching and creating, take care everyone, David Hurley

Flipping through the Sketch Book

I’ve had some fun over the last week or so in the sketch book and wanted to share some of my favorite drawings. Posting sketches seems to be happening on a regular basis, and I hope you are enjoying taking a peak behind the scenes. I’ve also added a Don’t Pick the Flowers extra to this post and pulled a sketch from the archives. I’ve actually done more than this, but for this week I’ve picked these as winners to display. Below each drawing you will find an explanation of each particular sketch.

Top Left: A warm up sketch I did one day of performance artist, Laurie Anderson.

Top Right: A charcoal sketch of Clay Animation heroes Wallace and Gromit.

Bottom Left: A cartoony marker sketch of Grace Jones.

Bottom Right: Last week I posted a sketch of Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, this is Robin Guthrie (former Cocteau Twins now solo). I drew this last year on his birthday. Maybe I should have posted them side by side last week, but here he is.

Again, I hope you’ve enjoyed looking inside my sketch book. There will be more sketches to post next week, until then, keep sketching!  David
