I don’t know about ducks, but geese need to have the shell cracked a bit to allow air in when they are ready to hatch. Now, it is a balance game, because the gooselet needs the exercise of breaking the shell off by itself to prepare it for life in the outside world. If you break the whole thing and pull the hatchling out, it will die.
A traumatizing childhood probably! But, at least he didn’t get boiled.
